Number of departments at the Faculty, initially 5, grew to 11 in 2005 and in 2011 it dropped to 9. Department of Computational Mathematics (CM), Modeling of Complex Systems (MCS) and Theoretical Cybernetics (TC) have remained unchanged since 1969, the year of faculty’s foundation.
New departments have emerged because of the need to adequately meet the increasing demands for highly qualified specialists in various fields of science, where methods of cybernetics had been penetrating, as well as to the deepening of research in Theoretical cybernetics, development of new areas in mathematics, the theory and practice of programming and scaling up information technologies, along with progress in computer technology production.
Thus three new departments were established in the 70-s: TP — Theory of Programming (founder — Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Volodymyr Redko); MFC — Mathematical Foundations of Cybernetics (founder — Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Victor Charin); AS — Applied Statistics (founder — Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Volodymyr Anisimov).
AS Department was founded on the basis of TC Department. In the same way (in the 80-s) a new department — Numerical Methods of Mathematical Physics (NMMP) branched off from CM Department (Founder — Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Volodymyr Makarov), as well as Department Theory of Automated Systems (TAS) branched off from MCS (founder — Doctor of Technical Sciences Victor Volkovich).
And the last, but not least, at the turn of 80-s and 90-s, General Informatics (GI) Department was established (founder — Doctor of Technical Sciences Iurii Popov).
The expansion or change of the subject area happened to change or clarify the names of departments: Mathematical Linguistics (ML) Department, which in some documents in 1969 was known as Applied Linguistics Department, was changed into Department of Mathematical Informatics (MI); Department of Theory of Programming (TP) clarified its name as Department of Theory and Technologies of Programming (TTP); Department of Mathematical Foundations of Cybernetics received a new name "Department of Operations Research" (OR). Department of Theory of Automated Systems (TAS) — into Department of Systems Analysis and Theory of Decision Making (SATDM), General Informatics (GI) — into Information Systems (IS).
Two departments were at first renamed (NMMP) — Numerical Methods in Mathematical Physics to MCE — Methods of Computational Experiment, and (EC) — Economic Cybernetics to (MMEER) — Mathematics Methods of Ecological and Economic Research, but ultimately they were eliminated since the demand for young graduates of such specializations has declined.
Units, dedicated to individual departments are located, beginning with transferred to the Faculty of Cybernetics from other faculties according to the order of Chancellor in 1969, the rest - in chronological order of their establishment:
- Computational Mathematics Department (CM) — 1957.
- Theoretical Cybernetics Department (ТК) — 1965.
- Economical Cybernetics Department (EC) — 1965. In 1992 part of staff moved to Economical Faculty. On the basis of the remaining staff the MMEER was created. In 2005 it was eliminated, the staff moved to MI Department.
- Mathematical Linguistics Department (ML) — 1964, later on changed scientific area and was transformed into Mathematical Informatics Department (МІ) in 1985.
- Modeling of Complex Systems Department (МСS) — 1969
- Theory of Programming Department (ТP) — 1971, was renamed to Theory and Technology of Programming Department (TTP) in 2004.
- Mathematical Foundations of Cybernetics Department — 1972, was renamed to Operations Research Department (OR) because of scientific area enhancement in 1997.
- Applied Statistics Department (AS) — 1978 (based on TC).
- Numerical Methods of Mathematical Physics Department(NMMP) — 1981 (based on CM), was renamed to Methods of Computational Experiment (MCE) Department in 1999, was eliminated in 2006, staff merged with CM Department.
- Theory of Automated Systems Department (TAS) — 1988 (based on MCS), was renamed to System Analysis and Theory of Desicion Making Department (SATDM) because of scientific area change in 1998.
- General Informatics Department — 1990, was renamed to Information Systems Department (ІС) in 1998 because of scientific area change.
